Britten-Norman gains Canadian approval for BN2T-4S Islander

Britten-Norman has received Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) type certification for the BN2T-4S Islander, the turboprop version of its long-established utility aircraft powered by the Rolls-Royce Model 250 engine. The certification, issued under TCCA Type Certificate A-92, includes several enhancements to the aircraft, most notably an increased maximum take-off weight of 8,925 lbs, strengthening its suitability for challenging operational environments.

This achievement adds to existing approvals from the UK Civil Aviation Authority, EASA and the FAA, marking a strategic step in Britten-Norman’s international expansion. Recognition by the Canadian regulator opens the door to one of the world’s largest and most demanding remote and regional aviation markets. Canadian operators place high value on durable, reliable, short-field aircraft capable of year-round performance in harsh weather and across isolated terrain, positioning the BN2T-4S as a strong contender in the sector.

Britten-Norman has confirmed that new BN2T-4S Islander production slots are now available. In addition, pre-owned aircraft of the same model are undergoing full factory refurbishment at the company’s UK MRO facility, providing operators with flexible options for fleet introduction. Whether selecting new-build or refurbished variants, operators joining the Islander fleet are offered a tailored pathway to suit operational requirements and budget.

Mark Shipp, Technical Director and Head of Design, commented: “Achieving type certification for any aircraft requires extensive technical work and close collaboration with regulators. We’re proud to have worked with TCCA and UK CAA to demonstrate the BN2T-4S’s compliance and capability. This approval is an important milestone for the Islander family and the operators who will be able to depend on its proven performance in one of the world’s most demanding environments.”

The certification underscores Britten-Norman’s commitment to supporting global operators with robust aircraft designed for reliability, versatility and cost-effective operation.
