WestJet Group and Government of Alberta create unique, historic aviation growth partnership

In a unique joint-venture, Canadian Airline WestJet, currently headquartered in Calgary, has entered into an historic partnership with the Government of Alberta for aviation growth across the province.

WestJet will now designate Calgary as its global connecting hub and all 787 Dreamliner intercontinental flights will be concentrated at Calgary. The intention is for Alberta to become the most cost-competitive aviation market in Canada, promoting the province to the world, driving sustainability, enhancing post-secondary programmes and improving the skilled labour supply for the aviation sector.

While WestJet will invest seven billion dollars in aircraft capacity in Calgary alone, the carrier will also be investing heavily in fleet commitments throughout the province. WestJet is also committing to doubling its Calgary capacity before the end of the decade, while unlocking new routes in North America and Europe through growth of its mid-range fleet.

According to its June 2022 strategic plan and with the purchase of 42 Boeing 737-10 MAX aircraft, WestJet will also be growing its network across other Canadian communities. The agreement between the airline and the Government of Alberta will see the government invest in developing Alberta’s aviation sector. It further lays out strategic, collaborative priorities to ensure provincial policies are aligned and in support of the development of the entire aviation industry in Alberta.
